Beckenham is first recorded in an Anglo Saxon charter dated 862. The settlement is referred to as Bachemham, rather than the modern day Beckenham. It remained a rural village until 1760 when John Cator built Beckenham Place after purchasing the Manor of Beckenham. Further development took place after the arrival of Beckenham’s railway services in 1857.

Beckenham became a suburb of Greater London in 1965, but has maintained its identity as a town centred around the retail area of Beckenham High Street. Further shops run east from Beckenham town centre and west along Beckenham Road to Clock House Station.

Beckenham town centre is served by Beckenham Junction Station, with Clock House, New Beckenham and Beckenham Hill serving the surrounding areas. Beckenham also benefits from a tram service from Beckenham Junction and Beckenham Road to Wimbledon.

Beckenham is bustling with culture and leisure. Beckenham Odeon has 6 screens and is a grade II listed building. Beckenham Festival of Music and Dance takes place every November. Beckenham theatre regularly puts on amateur productions and the Beckenham Concert Band is over 35 years old.
