Kent has been occupied since the Palaeolithic era (3 million years ago) as evidenced by finds in north Kent quarries. Archaeologists have retrieved artifacts detailing a rich history running through the Bronze Age, Celtic Iron Age and Brito-Roman eras of occupation. Julius Caesar referred to Kent as Cantium and wrote that the people of Kent were 'by far the most civilised inhabitants of Britain. Germanic speakers followed the Romans bringing their language with them, which went on to become know as Old English. The most prominent of these occupying tribes was the Jutes and Kent became a Jutish Kingdom. Kent's Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in England. Founded in 597, it was then completely rebuilt between 1070 - 1077. England has relied on the ports of Kent through much of its history. Continental France can be seen from both Folkestone and Dover in good weather.

Because of its numerous fruit farms and hop gardens, Kent is affectionately known as the 'Garden of England'.

Modern day Kent has a diverse and thriving economy, with tourism, haulage and logistics as important industries. North Kent is a heavily industrialised area, playing host to cement making, ship building, aircraft design and mining. Dungeness is home to two nuclear power stations, although the elder of the two has been decommissioned.
